Job Opportunity: Water Resources Scientist/Hydrologist

We're looking for an enthusiastic, organized, detail-oriented self-starter to join our team and take on the following responsibilities.

Responsibilities 

  • Complete project plan reviews for compliance with watershed management organization’s goals, policies, and standards.

  • Review, investigate, and coordinate erosion and drainage issue remedies with senior staff.

  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, analyses, reports, drawings, specifications, and other documents for public infrastructure, water resources, or habitat restoration projects.

  • Create maps and drawings using ArcGIS and QGIS.

  • Assist project engineers and project managers with transportation drainage design, stormwater and best management practice design, modeling, and permitting projects.

  • Prepare hydrology, hydraulic, and water quality models with senior staff.

  • Analyze reports, maps, and other data sources to inform project planning and design.

  • Support development and implementation of local watershed district Watershed Management Plan and natural resources initiatives.

  • Review development plans, including but not limited to grading and erosion control plans, stormwater management plans, and construction plans, for conformance with water resources and natural resources-related rules.

  • Review drainage-related policies, recommend improvements, and coordinate policy updates with senior staff.

  • Prepare written reports and recommendations to clients, as needed.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in the water quality, stormwater management and natural resources fields to ensure local unit of government efforts are effective and efficient. Provide ideas for innovations and follow-through to implementation.

  • Investigate, inspect, and document findings of permitted construction sites.

  • Communicate with and respond to questions from developers, residents, and property owners in a timely and professional manner, as directed by senior staff.

  • Perform other related duties as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in hydrology, water resources management, environmental science, environmental studies, civil engineering, or a related field.

  • 0 to 3 years of experience.

  • Knowledge of hydrology and hydraulic concepts.

  • Valid driver's license. o Strong recent graduates are encouraged to apply; prior permitting experience or technical water resources knowledge is a plus and may shorten the learning curve but is not required.

Preferred:

  • University of Minnesota erosion and stormwater management certification.

  • Experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or hydrology software.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Ability to review and maintain an understanding of relevant local, state, and federal laws, particularly as they relate to water quality and stormwater management.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical ideas clearly, write well-organized professional reports and correspondence, and connect effectively with a diverse audience.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Comfortable applying basic math, geometry, and surveying concepts to engineering and field work.

  • Ability to use common Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as web-based email and timesheet software.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

  • Proactive communicator with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Ability to work with the public in a friendly, tactful manner.

Job Type: Full-time 

Compensation and Benefits: $60,000–$85,000 (depending on qualifications) salary, flexible schedule, paid time off, safe and sick time, nine paid holidays, retirement benefits (401k match), and health benefits (medical, dental, vision and health savings account).

Location: Employees in this position are required to work in the office every Monday. This role also requires travel to client meetings or project sites up to two days per week, as business needs dictate. Additional remote work flexibility may be granted over time based on demonstrated job performance, a strong understanding of the role, and the ability to work independently.
